Podiatrists share what you could do to prevent and soothe pesky toe cramps.
Many of us have experiencedcramps in our legs and feet.
Most of the time, muscle cramps go away on their own.
But why do they happen in the first place?
And what can you do to relieve a toe cramp the next time you get one?
We talked to a couple of feet experts to find out.
As anyone who’s experienced a cramp knowsall too well, they can be incredibly painful.
“A cramp is when the muscle contracts but does not immediately relax,” Schaeffer explains.
Toe cramps, specifically, tend to be the result of muscle contractions in your feet or legs.
Here are a few common causes.
Inadequate Hydration
One of the most commonly cited causes of toe cramps is dehydration.
But some research suggests that the truth is a bit messier than that.
Nutrient Deficiency
There’s some thinking that nutrient deficiencies may cause muscle cramps.
Poor Circulation
Poor circulation can be a cause of toe cramps, too.
But overexertion is widely recognized as one of the most common (potential) causes of muscle cramps.
This is because inadequate blood flow is thought to cause muscle cramps, and regular exercise can improve circulation.
Medical Conditions or Pregnancy
Many different medical conditions have been linked to muscle cramps or foot pain.
These include multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, diabetes, gout, and more.
Muscle cramps are also common in pregnancy.
Reportedly, about half of all pregnant people experience them.
Here’s what you’ve got the option to do to attempt to relieve the pain.
Stretch or Massage Your Foot
If your foot is cramping, try stretching or massaging itslowly.
“That could cause a muscle injury.”
Use a Warm Compress
Using a hot compress may help relax your foot and alleviate your cramp.
The warmth can help promote blood flow, relax your muscles, and reduce stiffness.
This method is particularly useful for cramps brought on by poor circulation and muscle fatigue.
Besides, you should be drinking enough water anyway.
Experts recommend about 15.5 cups for men and about 11.5 cups for women.
So attempt to get yourelectrolytelevels up by eating a quick snack.
Schaeffer specifically recommends eating a banana.
Even giving your feet temporary breaks can help for a few minutes or so.
It may hurt to stand on cramping toes, but getting your blood flowing may help alleviate your cramp.
Sometimes all you need is to move your body a little bit.
Start by soaking your feet in warm water with Epsom salt for 15 to 20 minutes.

Exercise Regularly
Exercise can help you keep your body in tip-top shape.
Just be sure not to push ittoohard because overexertion is linked to muscle cramps.
Be sure tostretch before and after exercise.
Alleviate tight muscles with heat, and relieve sore muscles with ice.
Drink and Eat Well
Staying hydrated is always a good idea.
Opt for shoes that have built-in support, like ankle straps, cushioning, and arch support.
Depending on the findings, the doctor may also evaluate your current medications to see if adjustments are needed.
