I learned my lesson then and there.
The good news is thatshrunken sweater mishapscan often be reversed.
You’ll need to be patient, but it can often be done.
Keep reading to learn how to stretch a shrunken sweater so it’s wearable again.
For the best results, begin the process of stretching a sweater as soon as possible.
Add 2 tablespoons of baby shampoo or liquid fabric softener and mix well.
Allow the sweater to soak for at least 30 minutes, or up to two hours.
The baby shampoo or fabric softener helps the fibers relax so they are easier to reshape.
Remove and Partially Dry
Remove the sweater from the solution and gently squeeze out the excess moisture.
Do not rinse, wring, or twist it.
Spread a heavy bath towel on a counter and lay the sweater flat on the towel.
Roll up the towel to help absorb water from the fibers.
Repeat with a second dry towel, if needed.
Re-Size the Sweater
Place the sweater on a cork bulletin board or blocking board.
Gently begin stretching the sweater back into its original size.
Pin the sweater to the board every two inches using T-shaped pins.
As you work, you may need to readjust the shape and pins several times.
Pin the paper to the bulletin board first to use as a guide.
To prevent fading, avoid placing it in direct sunlight.
Check on the sweater every few hours to ensure the pins are secure.
Drying may take up to 48 hours.
Once the sweater is dry, try it on.
