But there aremore efficient, and smarter, waysto get the job done.

What Is Dust?

A good amount of dust is dead skin cells.

(The average person can shed more than a pound a year.

Then there are the fibers that fall off your clothes (read: lint).

Another portion is fine soot clay, silicates, and salts thatshoes can track in.

Finally, theres miscellaneous grossness, likedust mite debris, pet dander, pollen, and hair.

Dry vs.

Wet Dusting

The two methods are pretty self-explanatory: Dry dusting means usinga dry toolto wipe down a surface.

Wet dusting is done with water or another liquid cleaner.

Most of the time, dry dusting is enough.

Skip the feather duster.

While totally classic, it just pushes particles around and doesnt actually capture them.

For wet dusting, the Scrub Daddy Damp Duster is our favoriteand its also reusable.

Annoyingly, theres no proven way to repel dust.

If you have ceiling fans or overhead lights, hit those first.

Next, dust the tops of window frames and treatments.

Then progress downward to the floor.

Heres a little more on how.

Light Fixtures

ensure theyre switched off, then rub them down gently with a dry microfiber cloth.

Window Treatments

Lint rollers work wonders on curtains.

Once a season, give em a pass with yourvacuums upholstery attachmenton the lowest suction mode.

For blinds, use a microfiber cloth and wipe slat by slat.

Furniture and Shelves

Go over surfaces with your handy-dandy microfiber cloth.

Next, wet dust with an all-purpose formula, like Pledge Multi-Surface Cleaner.

TV Screens

Gently swipe every inch with a microfiber or soft cloth.

Baseboards

Dry dust with a microfiber cloth.

Swipe with a Scrub Daddy Damp Duster.

Dip a clean microfiber cloth into the solution and wipe the baseboards again.

Floors

Vacuum loose dirt, then turn to something like Swiffers PowerMop.

For carpets, use a vacuum with a HEPA filter.
