Here’s how to do both.

Change the water filter every few months.

How often you descale also depends on how much mineral content is in your water.

It also depends on how often you use your machine.

If you only use it once a week, every six months is probably fine.

We asked the experts at Keurig how to clean the various parts of the machine in a flash.

Take out all parts.

Remove the tank/water reservoir, tray, and K-cup holder.

Remove the filter.

Take out the filter from inside the reservoir and set it aside.

Wash all parts in the sink with soapy water.

Fill the sink with warm water and dish soap.

Wash all coffee maker parts in the soapy water.

Do NOT submerge the actual coffee maker in water!

Rinse and dry.

Rinse everything with fresh water and towel dry.

Clean the exterior.

Wipe the outside of the machine with a damp cloth or sponge.

Replace everything.

Put all the parts back in place, including the filter.

How to Replace the Water Filter

Replacing the water filter isn’t cleaning, technically.

But it’s still a necessary part of maintaining your coffee maker.

Here’s how you do it:

Remove the old filter.

kick off the filter holder, which is inside the water reservoir.

Take out the old filter and throw it away.

(Check with your waste management company; you may be able to put it in recycling.)

Prepare the new filter cartridge.

Scrub and rinse the filter holder.

Use hot, soapy water to thoroughly wash the filter holder.

Replace in the filter holder and snap into place.

Insert the cartridge into the filter holder and put the filter holder back in place in the reservoir.

Empty the reservoir and fill with vinegar.

Turn off your Keurig, remove the water filter, and pour out any water.

fire off the coffee maker until the reservoir is empty.

opt for largest cup setting and run a brew cycle without a K-Cup in it.

Empty the hot contents in the mug and repeat this process until the reservoir is empty.

Rinse with water.

This will remove any trace of vinegar (and, who wants that in their coffee?).

Replace the filter and reservoir.

Re-insert the pieces and you’re ready to go!

This will help get rid of calcium deposits and keep your maker functional.

Unplug the machine and remove the pod holder from the funnel.

Unbend a paper clip and use it to etch away any gunk lodged in the pod holder’s tube.

Reassemble the pod holder and brew two cups of water to rinse out the needle.
