Bread

The refrigerator dries bread out fast.

Instead, keep what you’ll eat within four days at room temperature andfreeze the rest.

Just keep onions away from potatoes, which emit moisture and gases that can cause onions to rot.

Garlic

“Garlic should be stored in a cool, dry area,” says Dr. Li.

“In the fridge, garlic gets soft and dries out, causing it to start sprouting.”

Garlic will do well in the pantry for about two months.Store garlicloose so that air can move around it.

Batteries

Stash batteries in a drawer at room temperature.

Extreme cold (or heat) can diminish performance.

To speed ripening, store them in a paper bag.

Once ripe, they’ll last for about three days.
